There is one section before you come to a wide flat lookout area where the the trail is at its narrowest and the path becomes less than half a metre wide. I skipped down it on the way back and my advice would be try not to get psyched out ahead of time and treat it like any other hike that has some exposure. Trust us, we would tell you if this was a horrifying hike! There are also parts without exposure along the chained section so it’s not that you are walking right beside a huge drop off for the entire time. Though the majority of it is on a wide enough track with chains to hold onto and rock with good grip. This is not a hike for people who are really afraid of heights as you will see pretty big drops along the trail. It looks more intimidating than it is, and we’ll go into full details in our personal trail experience below. We were as surprised as anyone to find that Angels Landing (in the right conditions) is actually not that scary. We are not fans of hikes that feel genuinely dangerous. Well, we took on the Angels Landing hike (taking a lot of photos and video in precarious places) to show you what it’s like from the perspective of a couple who turned back at the Half Dome Cables and the ropes on Mount Storm King. If you’re reading this blog then you probably want to know just how difficult - or dangerous - the hike is. Read next: The best hikes in Zion National Park and Why we loved Zion in winter So knowing the best time to go, here’s what to expect from the hike itself. I was thrilled! It made all the difference and, despite being super nervous beforehand, I made it to the top and back feeling safe and happy and putting this hike firmly on my favourite trails in Utah list. From here you can see the start of the chained section and chill if there are a few stragglers coming down. Only a handful of people were arriving at a similar time as us to start the trail, meaning no crowds and many long sections of the Angels Landing hike were completely clear. The best thing about turning up at this time is that you can wait a while at Scout Lookout if needs be. What virtually no one tries, is going late! We visited in October and turned up at 3.30pm to find hardly anyone on the trail! Whether it is because everyone went early, people were worried about missing the last shuttle or simply it would interfere with dinner, we came to realise that the late afternoon was the best time to tackle the Angels Landing hike. The time virtually no one hikes Angels Landing He forgives me every day for casting judgement on people who don’t agree with the things I just mentioned. He’d show us that masks are a gift - one that allows us to safely gather in fellowship and keep our vulnerable safe from harm. The Jesus I know would show us how to protect each other. He would want us to stop destroying his father’s creation and start caring for the earth on which we tread. The Jesus I know would encourage both our faith in him and our trust in science. The Jesus I know said, “blessed are the poor” and would fight for better access to healthcare, a living wage, and pay equity for all of his people. The Jesus I know would be outraged by a nation that prioritizes wealth and power over its people. The Jesus I know would smile on people like my cousin Kristy and her wife Cara as they continue to care for two young foster children and love them like their own. It means access to quality health care, paid maternity leave, support for working mothers, more foster parents willing to take in children who need safe homes. The Jesus I know believes in reproductive justice and would remind us that pro-life extends beyond a delivery room. He’d weep with my sisters who relive their trauma when men in power brag about “grabbing women by the p*ssy.” He’d forgive them of their sins and try to soften their hearts. The Jesus I know would condemn police violence but the Jesus I know would show mercy by washing these officers’ feet. Who agrees to disagree to achieve a negative peace. The Jesus I know moved the pen that helped Martin Luther King write his Letter from a Birmingham Jail that proclaimed his disappointment in the white moderate who is more devoted to “order” than to justice. The Jesus I know would SAY THEIR NAMES, he’d be marching with us in the streets, whispering tenderly in our ears “Of course all lives matter - but all lives can’t matter until black lives do.” I do not have enough time to say the names of all God’s children who were murdered for being Black in America. The Jesus I know would mourn with the families of:īreonna Taylor George Floyd Philando Castile Amaud Arbrey Rayshard Brooks Daniel Prude Atatiana Jefferson Alton Sterling Freddie Gray Eric Garner Tamir Rice Michael Brown Treyvon Martin The Jesus I know would sit in cages with children who have been separated from their mothers at our Southern border. The Jesus I know is the earthly son of brown, refugee parents and would not be chanting “build a wall,” but instead, “Tear them down.” When done right, government can be one way - an institutionalized way - to love our neighbors at a larger scale. The Jesus I know was and is deeply political. It’s an election year, so hypocrisy, instances of weaponized Christianity, and the prevalence of White American Folk Religion are glaring to me. I am in a season where I’m trying to rekindle my faith after being deeply hurt by the church, and by its people. The painted dunes had just a few snowy patches still (mid May), but the white only added more color. There are several layers of colors in the views. The hike is worth the effort, the views are amazing. This hike requires a decent sense of balance. You do not want to tumble down the steep side of the cone, there's nothing to stop you until the bottom. My only worry was that the edges of the path were still snowy which made the path narrow, and the edge felt pretty close sometimes. And I'm 53 and a very amateur hiker, who has sprained his ankle before twice! I just took it slow and make sure I had a steady foothold each time. Based on other reviews I was prepared to slide and slip with every step, but I used hiking poles and am happy to say I never slipped once, never even felt in danger of it. The path is gravel (mostly pretty fine gravel thankfully) and fine ash as a base. The trickier part is minding your footing. I wouldn't call the hike strenuous if you take it slow, a footstep at a time. Unlike other areas in the park I never really had to stop because I was winded either. That said, it only took about half an hour for me to reach the top, which I believe is about a 700 foot elevation gain. We had trouble finding the trail a few times, we hiked a few days after it opened for the year, but my son used his All Trails map to help guide us.Īs we approached the Cinder Cone I thought man that looks way too tall to hike up! Oddly at the base it seemed smaller, but the trail up still looked and is pretty steep, near a 45 degree angle in parts. Mudflows ( lahars) have buried entire communities located near erupting volcanoes. It's about a half hour or so hike to the Cinder Cone itself, through the woods alongside the very tall and impressive giant lava flows. When hot volcanic materials mix with water from streams or melted snow and ice, mudflows form. If thick enough, blankets of ash can suffocate plants, animals, and humans. Ash erupted into the sky falls back to Earth like powdery snow. These fiery clouds race down mountainsides destroying almost everything in their path. Tephra can range in size from tiny particles of ash to house-size boulders.Įxplosive volcanic eruptions can be dangerous and deadly. They can blast out clouds of hot tephra from the side or top of a volcano. In this type of eruption, the magma blasts into the air and breaks apart into pieces called tephra. A good example is the eruption of Washington’s Mount St. Pressure builds up until the gases escape violently and explode. If magma is thick and sticky, gases cannot escape easily. Lava flows rarely kill people because they move slowly enough for people to get out of their way. A good example is the eruptions at Hawaii’s volcanoes. When this type of magma erupts, it flows out of the volcano. If magma is thin and runny, gases can escape easily from it. Some volcanic eruptions are explosive and others are not. The explosivity of an eruption depends on the composition of the magma. Eventually, some of the magma pushes through vents and fissures to the Earth's surface. Since it is lighter than the solid rock around it, magma rises and collects in magma chambers. Deep within the Earth it is so hot that some rocks slowly melt and become a thick flowing substance called magma. The Forward and Backward buttons will skip to the previous or next reading unit. It takes place in the Arena Eternal, a chaotic dimension created by mysterious "Arena Masters" (known as the elusive race of Vadrigar) for their own amusement. The sequel to Quake II (and the first to use the new id Tech 3 engine), Quake III Arena is focused solely on multiplayer combat (and is the first to have no traditional single-player campaign). A limited open beta was released on April 24, 1999. Quake III Arena is a sci-fi dark-fantasy multiplayer-focused first-person shooter developed and published by Activision for the PC, Mac, and Linux on December 2, 1999. The movement emphasised the importance of ad fontes, or study of original sources, and initially focused on the reconstruction of secular Greek and Latin texts. Renaissance humanism began during the 14th century in Italy and arrived in France in the early 16th, coinciding with the rise of Protestantism in France. John Calvin, whose ideas became central to French Protestantism Introduction of Reformation ideas During this time, complex diplomatic negotiations and agreements of peace were followed by renewed conflict and power struggles. However, the agreed upon beginning of the wars is the Massacre of Wassy in 1562, and the Edict of Nantes at least ended this series of conflicts. The exact number of wars and their respective dates are subject to continued debate by historians: some assert that the Edict of Nantes in 1598 concluded the wars, while the ensuing resurgence of rebellious activity leads some to believe the Peace of Alès in 1629 is the actual conclusion. 8.3 Resolution of the War in Brittany (1598–1599)Īlong with French Wars of Religion and Huguenot Wars, the wars have also been variously described as the "Eight Wars of Religion", or simply the "Wars of Religion" (only within France).7 Henry IV's "Conquest of the Kingdom" (1589–1593).6.3 The assassination of Henry III (1589). 6.2 The Estates-General of Blois and assassination of Henry of Guise (1588).5.2 The Catholic League and the "sixth" war (1576–1577).5.1 Death of Charles IX and the "fifth" war (1574–1576).Bartholomew's Day Massacre and after (1572–1573) Their Bourbon successor Henry IV responded by creating a strong central state, a policy continued by his successors and culminating with Louis XIV of France who in 1685 revoked the Edict of Nantes. The wars threatened the authority of the monarchy and the last Valois kings, Catherine's three sons Francis II, Charles IX, and Henry III. Bartholomew's Day massacre in Paris, which resulted in Catholic mobs killing between 5,000 and 30,000 Protestants throughout France. She later hardened her stance and backed the 1572 St. They were initially supported by Catherine de' Medici, whose January 1562 Edict of Saint-Germain was strongly opposed by the Guise faction and led to the outbreak of widespread fighting in March. Moderates, also known as Politiques, hoped to maintain order by centralising power and making concessions to Huguenots, rather than the policies of repression pursued by Henry II and his father Francis I. Both sides received assistance from external powers, Spain and Savoy supporting the Catholics, while England and the Dutch Republic backed the Protestants. These included a fervently Catholic faction led by the Guise and Montmorency families and Protestants headed by the House of Condé and Jeanne d'Albret. The death of Henry II of France in July 1559 initiated a prolonged struggle for power between his widow Catherine de' Medici and powerful nobles. Tensions between the religions had been building since the 1530s, exacerbating existing regional divisions. However, this did not end Catholic hostility towards Protestants in general or him personally, and his assassination in 1610 led to a fresh round of Huguenot rebellions in the 1620s. Fighting ended in 1598 when the Protestant Henry of Navarre converted to Catholicism, was proclaimed Henry IV of France and issued the Edict of Nantes, granting the Huguenots substantial rights and freedoms. Estimates suggest between two to four million people died from violence, famine or disease directly arising from the conflict, which also severely damaged the power of the French monarchy. The French Wars of Religion is the term used for a period of civil war from 1562 to 1598 between French Catholics and Protestants, commonly called Huguenots. Also, the intended usage for a user state is to maintain state that's necessary for the parser to decide how to perform the actual parse. A parser written in this form will be harder to understand and modify than the standard approach. However, both these approaches of building up a state while parsing are weird and non-standard. (Left err, _) -> error $ "parse error: " ++ show err For example: type Parser'' = ParsecT String () ( Board)Ĭase runState (runParserT moves'' () "" str) board0 of (State Board) monad transformer stack with a standard State layer. Here, loadGame' runs the parser on the user state with moves' and then uses a getState call to fetch the final board.Ī nearly equivalent solution, since ParsecT is a monad transformer, is to create a ParsecT. Will generate the final game state: loadGame' :: String -> BoardĬase runParser (moves' > getState) ,] "" str of Now, the act of simply parsing a list of moves: moves' :: Parser' () Note that move''s return type is () because its action is implemented as a side-effect on the user state. Define a parser with a Board user state: type Parser' = Parsec String BoardĪnd then a parser for a single move that modifies the user state: move' :: Parser' () To actually thread a state through a set of parsers, you can use the "user state" feature of Parsec. Moves1 = foldl' turn board0 sepBy move (char ',')īut this won't generalize too well if you have multiple parsers that need to operate on a single underlying state. In this particular case, given the definition of turn above, we can parse directly into a Board by incorporating the fold from the game function into the parser: moves1 :: Parser Board If you really want to build up the state during the parse, there are several ways to do it. This should be your go-to solution for this kind of problem: parse first into a simple stateless intermediate form, and then process this intermediate form in a "stateful" computation. Left err -> error $ "parse error: " ++ show err ~ pĪnd then connect them together in a loadGame function: loadGame :: String -> Board We can separate the parser, which just generates a list of moves: data Move = Move Piece Int Intįrom the functions that regenerate the game state: board0 :: Board Into a board ,] representing the game state: O | X | Let's say we have a tic-tac-toe board: data Piece = X | O | N deriving (Show) The simplest way to incorporate a "state" into a parser is not to do it at all. Using money from a tax refund and a loan from Eastman's uncle, they printed copies of first issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and advertised it in Comics Buyer's Guide Magazine. In March 1984, Eastman and Laird founded a comic book company, Mirage Studios, in their home. They developed a backstory referencing further elements of Daredevil: like Daredevil, the Turtles are altered by radioactive material, and their sensei, Splinter, is a play on Daredevil's sensei, Stick. Laird said the names "felt just quirky enough to fit the concept". ĭeveloping the concept into a comic book, Eastman and Laird considered giving the turtles Japanese names, but instead named them after the Italian Renaissance artists Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo. The concept parodied several elements popular in superhero comics of the time: the mutants of Uncanny X-Men, the teenagers of New Teen Titans and the ninjas of Daredevil, combined with the comic tradition of funny animals such as Howard the Duck. That November, Eastman drew a masked turtle standing on its hind legs armed with nunchucks. In 1983, Laird invited Eastman to move in with him in Dover, New Hampshire. 1 (May 1984)Ĭomic book authors Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird met in Massachusetts and began working on illustrations together. In some European regions, the word "ninja" in the name was replaced with "hero" for its violent connotations. About US$1.1 billion of Turtles toys were sold between 19, making them the third-bestselling toy figures ever at the time. In 1987, Eastman and Laird licensed the characters to Playmates Toys, which developed a line of Turtles action figures. The first issue was published in 1984 by Eastman and Laird's company Mirage Studios and was a surprise success. The franchise began as a comic book, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which Eastman and Laird conceived as a parody of elements popular in superhero comics at the time. Supporting characters include the turtles' rat sensei and adoptive father Splinter, their human friends April O'Neil and Casey Jones, and enemies such as Baxter Stockman, Krang, and their archenemy, the Shredder. It follows Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael, four anthropomorphic turtle brothers trained in ninjutsu who fight evil in New York City.
